It is now possible to create dashboards with Power BI using SAP HANA databases as a data source.
However, the installation of Power BI Desktop alone is not enough to make a first dashboard.
Following the selection of the type of data to be acquired, in our case SAP HANA database.
An information message appears, informing us of the need to install additional components.
SAP HANA Client installation
For proper operation, it is necessary to install the latest SAP HANA client, depending on your SAP HANA version 1.0 or 2.0.
To do so you must go to the SAP website: https://launchpad.support.sap.com/#/softwarecenter
To save time, use the search bar and type SAP HANA CLIENT.
Select the version that suits you according to your environment (in my case 2.0). In the drop-down menu select the version based on your pc client environment, for my part Windows 64 bit.
After clicking on the download link, you will need to authenticate yourself to download the file.
Once your file has been repatriated (IMDB-CLIENT20-004-139-80002083.SAR), it is necessary to decompress it.
As a SAR file, you should use the SAPCAR app available here.
Decompress the SAPCAR.zip file.
Create a HANA directory at the root of c:\ and place SAPCAR.exe from the zip decompression in it.
Do the same with file IMDB-CLIENT20-004-139-80002083.SAR .
Open a command prompt (cmd.exe) and go to C:\HANA\ and type the command: SAPCAR.EXE -xvf the_name_of_the_SAR_file, to decompress it.
Once the decompression is done, SAPCAR tells you the number of of extracted files.
Now, place yourself on C:\HANA\SAP_HANA_CLIENT and run the hdbsetup.exe file, to start the SAP HANA client procedure.
All you have to do is follow the assistant’s instructions.
Once the SAP HANA Client is installed. Launch Power BI Desktop and select SAP HANA database connexion.
Enter the connection information.
Type your authentication information as below
Once the connection is validated you have access to the HANA VIEWS. All you have to do is select your dimensions or measurements to create your dashboard with Power BI Desktop.
